Since I know I can be verbose, let me summarize quickly before explaining: I need a way to mark positions in a tape I'm editing and assign labels to them.
To explain further:
I'm editing a tape of a conversation between adults and a two-year-old child whose speech is difficult to understand, but which I need to excerpt into audio clips for further analysis. For the material to be excerpted, I use regions, named with the words I understand the child to be saying, and I'll be saving them all to disc by the simple "Export Regions as files" command (as I have done for over a decade now with a great many other such conversations, this being the only use I make of Pro Tools and the reason I bought it).
In this particular case, the child's speech is so difficult that I frequently need to label sections of the tape with what the adult is saying (for which I have an accompanying transcript), the better to find where I am in the tape. I'd like to avoid using regions for this since I don't want to have to un-select them before the mass Export, and I'd like to limit the track below (where I drag the excerpts) to child utterances and child utterances only. What I'd really like would be if there were a way to mark particular locations with a label that I could read at the top, independently of the regions I have selected.
This capability exists in Vegas Video and in Sound Forge. In both cases all one has to do is press 'M' for a marker, the name of which one can then edit.
So far, I have been unable to find a way to do this in Pro Tools.
Thanks for your help.
P.S. This convenience I seek is not so trivial as it may sound: there are over 1200 child utterances to deal with on this tape!
