Pro Tools 'Stuck' On a Region

It worked fine all day yesterday, and now my Pro Tools (version 8, 64-bit Windows 7) opens stuck on the most-recently selected region. Of course it's normal for that region to be selected when Pro Tools opens, but wherever I place the pointer elsewhere on the track, it still plays that already-selected region and nothing else - with one exception: I can move the cursor all the way to the beginning or end of the track, and Pro Tools will play the tape from there. But then it plays only from whichever of those two places I had put it when I subsequently put the cursor somewhere else.

I have tried this with other PTF files and I get the same result. I have also re-booted but still have the same problem. And I have re-intalled Pro Tools (actually 'repaired' from the original CD) without fixing the problem.

When I move the same PTFs to another 64-bit Windows 7 computer where I have Pro Tools installed (precisely in order to have a temporary workaround when problems arise), I find that these same PDFs have no problem there. That is, I get the expected behavior of having the tape play from whatever arbitrary place I put the cursor.

I was poking around with settings toward the end of the day yesterday in an effort to find how to set Markers... could it be that I inadvertently set something that causes this behavior?

The above description suggests a virus might be to blame but my anti-malware program (Webroot) finds nothing wrong.
