pt 11 on win 7 v osx and mbox requirement

Hello all

We have Pro tools 11 on macs running mavericks and on PC's running windows 7.

The main differenece seems to be that the macs do not need the mbox attached and can run straight from iLok. However the PC requires an Mbox attached.

I guess my questions is why?

Any ideas?
