mbox 4X4 and 11R

I got me a 4X4 mbox 3. Thanks to the fine folks in this thread I sort of highjacked, it was a very well informed investment.

It's as nice sounding as promised. NST7, YYR123 and zarabozo steered me in the right direction. I've got the GT-100 going into the front instrument jacks just for the convenience of leaving something else hooked up to the XLR input in the back. The 11R is going into the mbox via the SPDIF ports. That's my first question.

I've got a pair of red & white RCA cables. The are connected and seem to be working. Is it wise or unwise to use these in place of regular SPDIF cables? I do not have 2 SPDIF cables, but can go get another one if needed. It appears to be the typical old red and white pair that we've seen for years and years. Much to my surprise, these work. I know it's digital and should not have signal loss like a cheap audio analog cable would, but I don't know if it's not a bad thing to do for certain.

Second question. Is there typically any difference between TRS and XLR cables? I'm running Mackie monitors. MR8MK2. The monitor has XLR, TRS and RCA. I had been running XLR from the back of the 11R into the monitors. I did not have two TRS cables. I do have one and I hooked it up. It sounds nice and clear. The mbox-3 user's guide said that I could run a TS cable, but here would be possible noise and signal loss. Sure enough, there are both. So my questions on monitor connections could include....

#1: Is it is important to have a matched pair of cables?

#2: Is XLR any different from TRS in sound quality? (One of the cables has to run 12 feet, in case it matters.)

#3: Is it a bad idea to use adapters or short connection cables of any sort. In my case, it would mean a TRS to XLR adapter.

Thanks in advance :-)
