Caddies for HDD access

Using a 6 year old computer running PT HD3 8.1 on XP. Been running 2 caddies for HDD access, but notice that sometimes I need to disconnect one for PT to run properly. When that happens I replace the caddy and its ok until the problem re appears usually within a few months. So the question is - why does this happen?



Are there some (trayless ?) caddies that are more reliable than others? Are there any alternative methods for hot swapping data drives containing audio? We have dozens of drives and need to swap them around often.
