Relinking Problem - file incompatible error message

I have two tunes with missing files. I've tried relinking in a variety of ways and PT couldn't find them. I've tried force relinking the files and got an error message that the files were incompatible in format, sample rate or bit depth with the file I was trying to relink. I know the file is the same format and sample rate, and the bit depth is 16 instead of 24, which is what the session is. What is the best way to resolve this issue?
