Offline Bounce Bus Muting Clue

I got caught by Offline Bounce a few weeks ago when re-delivering a mix to post. One of the nested busses in the mix muted and left the vocal by itself. I fixed it later, but it was very disappointing as well as scary to not be able to trust OB (that I have used extensively for 6 months).

I re-opened that session to grab something else, and for the first time I noticed that the tiny "Dly" indicator in the Edit window Transport box was red. I know I should have caught it earlier, but…

I hovered the cursor over the Dly and Pro Tools told me there was a feedback loop on the bus that had muted in the OB and that Pro Tools was going to ignore it. I then checked the bus routing six ways from Sunday and could find no feedback loop. As the bus was re-entering on an Aux track I deleted the track and rebuilt it exactly as it was before. Dly turned green and sure enough, the OB was magically fixed.

Interestingly, the live mix was not affected (the bus wasn't "ignored"), only the Bounce.

So here's the takeaway:

Whenever you do an Offline Bounce, check to make sure Dly is green.

It will only take a second.
