Hello ,
I am new to recording, and I will be recording my 3 piece band (drums, bass, guitar then vocals). I have been watching a lot of videos on proper recording levels and I have some questions. I'm gonna record a guitar amp with an SM57 through a Scarlett 2i2 (2 inputs) audio interface, then into Pro Tools 11.
From what I've researched (opinions vary on this) setting the line level to somewhere between -12 dB and -18 dB seems to be the way to go. (I understand the concept of analogue zero being -18 dB & leaving headroom for mastering).
For example, if I did want to record at a level of -18 dB. That would mean that when I am sound checking guitar, I should adjust the gain knob on my interface to where the highest peak I play should be at -18 dB. Then I should start recording.
If I do that, then how would I hear my guitar in playback? Or to see if any audio (drums, bass, vocals) are good if you can't really hear them in playback? I am guessing I would just turn up my headphones and worry about final levels in the mastering stage, but I just want to be sure.
THANK YOU!
