New interface? New drive? Or a new Mac?

Hello - this is my first post here so please forgive me in advance.

I have followed all of the instructions on the "Help us Help You" link. I have just completed the system optimization instructions for OSX Lion. I am having continuing difficulties in my workflow and would appreciate any assistance that is offered.

I have been using Pro Tools 10 (non HD) on Mac OSX for about a year. Previously, I had worked with Sonar on a Win 7 PC.

I have tried multiple interfaces such as M-Audio Fast Track Ultra, RME Hammerfall, RME Babyface, Akai EIE, MOTU 828 and finally the MOTU 8pre.

Some of the difficulties I have been having include CPU overload messages and interfaces intermittently disconnecting from the system. Also I have experienced clicks, pops, glitches, and latency on multiple buffer settings. Obviously I have tried USB interfaces, PCIE interfaces, Hybrid and FireWire with varying degrees of success (or failure) with each. I have sold most of these interfaces and currently have been attempting a recording project (44.1 - 16bit with buffer size at 256). I currently have a project with five tracks with less than one plugin on each. I have had more success at various times with lower buffer settings, more tracks and more plugins. I have been getting CPU overloads and clicks and pops on playback with just these five tracks.

With so many things in flux, it's hard to pinpoint exactly what the issue is. It will work flawlessly for a day or two and then all hell breaks lose.

Doing the Avid system optimization, it has come to my attention that I may have more than just a few issues. Haha. Anyway both my SATA hard drives are not up to the 7200 spec. My 'cloverfield' processors are on the bottom of the accepted requirements.

I feel like I have the itch to buy another interface and have my eyes on the Metric Halo ULN2.

My question to all of you is which avenue should I pursue. I don't want to waste money on a new Mac when the hard drive may be the issue. I also think I may be jumping the gun a little on the interface when the 8pre may be plenty to meet my needs.

Usually I only record at most two tracks at once. Projects at times will have multiple VSTI's which I trigger with my MIDI guitar into the AXON. I would like to obviously have a little headroom and I suppose I could always connect the 8pre as an ADAT slave to the ULN2.

Wow that is a lot to mull over. Thank you all once again. Any input would be appreciated!
