Recording MIDI controller data only

I'm having a complete brain fart, which is extending to not being able to find this online or in the PT reference manual.



I need to re-record some controller data on an instrument track without recording over the notes. MIDI merge gets me a mishmash of old and new controller data. MIDI merge off loses my notes.



What am I forgetting? Thanks!
