I'm looking at doing a version of the 1812 Overture as a showcase piece for my studio. Mostly vi's for everything except bells, percussion and cannon. I haven't quite decided on playing it straight with real orchestral instruments or synths but one thing I'd like to have real is the cannon. I have access to a small 3 pound cannon and the outdoor space to record in.
What I'm looking for is a mic that will take the huge instantaneous sound impulse from up close (3 feet or so) as the cannon is fired. I'll be using other mics as well to capture the rest of the sound field. I remember reading the back of album notes on a recording of the 1812 that was done decades back and they talked about all the troubles they had finding mics that would stand up to the spl. This was some 50 years ago I read that and the album was older than that.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I can use? Will rent if necessary. Or am I nuts to try and do this and is there out there someone who's done the work and has cannon samples already recorded?
