Bouncing to .WAV and .MP3

In bouncing to disk, it seems the only way to get an .MP3 file is also bouncing in .WAV format. I realize I could do the "two bounce" first and then come back bouncing only to .wav.

The real reason this comes up is the larger issue of .WAV versus .MP3. It seems that the .MP3 files are, upon playback, uniformly 2dB or so lower in volume than the accompanying .WAV file. In this an inherent difference of .MP3, or is this the Pro Tools converter at work?

Furthermore, what is the general consensus on the two formats? Aside from the significantly smaller file size of .MP3, the fact that so many download services specify .MP3, and the aforementioned compression/gain differences, my (tired and old) ears detect little if any discernable audio difference.

What does the Pro Tools universe think? Inquiring minds want to know.
