How do I import AVCHD package video files from Sony HD cam?

Having a ton of trouble getting these files off my Sony HD cam and into a proper format to import to pro tools so I can mix and process audio. The Sony HD cam puts everythign it records into a single AVCHD package file...each new recording I make becomes another vieo sub-file inside the AVCHD package on the cam's hard drive. Thus far, the only way I've found to extract the video files from this AVCHD package is using QuickTime to export to a video file, then import that into pro tools. Well...when I do that, upon playback in pro tools, the video freezes after the first frame, and stays frozen for the duration of playback. I've tried various different conversion options for the video files before importing to pro tools, including QT .mov, .mp4...using various video codecs, etc...nothing seems to work. Also, I have trouble importing the audio files with those video files...I get an error message and won't allow to import the audio files...I have to export them separately from QT and then import separately.

Any ideas on this?...there is absolutely nothing constructive on this topic that I can find anywhere online.

Many Thanks.
