So I do understand it is recommended to run Pro Tools off an external drive rather than your internal drive. But in my case it comes down to not having enough USB ports. Well I DO have enough, its just easier to run it off my internal SSD because then it opens enough ports for me to still have my mouse and keyboard attached, which are pretty much a must for workflow.
What are the downsides of running Pro Tools from your internal Solid State drive versus an external 7200 drive? Im assuming it might shorten the life of my SSD having to launch pro tools all the time. If thats the case, to what extent?
This is the order for my ports right now.
2 main ports coming from Macbook
1.)Interface powering my monitors 2.)Usb Hub.
4 ports on Usb Hub
1.)ILOK 2.)Mouse 3.)Keyboard 4.)Midi Keyboard during Pro Tools/Backup drive in-between Pro Tools.
As you can see, no room to give the external drive a permanent spot. I need to remove it every now and then to make room for my midi controller. So obviously I can't be running Pro Tools off of it.
So the main question I made this thread : Is it so bad to run pro tools off an internal drive that I should be worried about how often I am doing it and trying to free up a port asap? Or is it just recommended for most systems, but not really a huge deal?
