I have a friend who is a studio owner. He is an amazing musician, but never really cared about technology, protools, computers, etc.
About a year ago, somebody sold him what he said was a legit upgrade to ProTools HD 10, with an iLok. When we pulled up the account info for the iLok, we discovered that the info was wrong. The account name and password that was written down did not match the account info on the iLok. We called the person who sold it to him to ask for the details, and he said he just rented him the iLok with a PTHD10 auth, indefinitely, for $1000.
Now, whether the studio owner agreed to this "deal" or not, I can't say, but what he thought he was getting was a legit authorization of ProTools HD10, and this is what they agreed on, apparently. We don't have much of a paper trail, but i did record the conversation of the seller saying he sold the "use of an iLok" to the studio owner, for $1000. Regardless of any other details, I am pretty sure this is illegal. Unfortunately, this studio now relies on this iLok, and I am worried that the seller might at some point de-activate the auth we are using.
I have dealt with iLok before and don't expect them to be much of a help on this, and I don't want to pay for a support code just to get Avid on the phone. Any advice?
Curious everybody's thoughts on this. If we can't get a refund or the transfer of the code, we're definitely going to chase this kid down. FWIW, he did install a bunch of cracked Waves plugins on one system drive at the studio, and I know how Waves treats people they catch stealing their software...
