Cannot open effects on protools

Help! Whenever I try to insert a plug-in effect such as Reverb or EQ onto a track, I get a weird message saying:



Assertion in "..\..\Sys\Win32\Sys_VolumeWin32,cpp" line 237



Until I remove this message, everything is frozen.

Anyone able to help?
