I have a mid 2011 27" imac as of now. I added a SSD system drive, and bumped the ram up to 24GB. It's been a good workhorse, but I'm needing a little more power. I've also been working on an mbox 3, but would like to upgrade to native.
The main reason I want to go native is because I do a lot of editing for other engineers, as well as mix prepping. I need more voices, because often times working on sessions I'm having to delete and reimport tracks because the count gets too high. I don't record big sessions myself on this rig, it's mostly used for songwriting and pre production. So I use a lot of VIs and I have a pretty extensive sample library on several drives.
I'm wondering will the iMac be able to meet my connectivity needs? It has 2 thunderbolt 2 ports, but I believe they are on the same bus. When I am tracking, will I run in to problems with the Native box plugged into one thunderbolt port, and my recording drive plugged in to the other? On my current setup, when they ( the Mac repair shop I use) added the ssd drive, they swapped out the existing disk with a 4TB drive for recording. That would solve my issues with the 5k, but when they opened it up they got dust behind the screen. As well as thumbprints. Unless you were in a hermetically sealed room with gloves on, I see this being a problem every time the iMac is opened up. Thankfully in the new iMac the ram is user accessible. So I don't want to open this one up. I'm essentially stuck with 3 USB ports and 2 thunderbolt 2 ports.
Like I said, as far as tracking goes, I don't do a ton, so it would mostly be overdubs, vocals, guitars, and the like. No more than two inputs at a time.
Before I pulled the trigger, just wondering if anyone is using the new imac with a native setup, and if so, how is it working? Also, I'm not sure how much information a single thunderbolt 2 bus can handle, maybe recording to a thunderbolt drive as well as having the native box plugged in the other wouldn't even stress the system.
