What is the role of the automation window?

Hello all,



I am having some confusion over the automation window in pro tools 11. In the reference guide, it suggests that you can turn off specific automations using the automation window such as pan, whilst keeping the the volume automation on. Despite this, when I turn the the pan automation off and keep the volume automation on (based on what is said in the reference guide), It seems to just turn off all of the automation, meaning that I cannot alter the volume automation as well as the pan automation. Surely this cannot be right? If anyone has any answers that would be very helpful!
