I'm sorry AVID. I'm sorry that I spent so many thousands of dollars, man months with your software, your hardware, and know it like the back of my hand. I've done a lot of music and mastering with it over the last 5 years. I was about to purchase another Artist Mix and a Control and came within 1 hour of doing so. You gave me no choice, so I had to make one.
You've released 12 HD and still haven't offered any explanation or alternative choices for HD owners, yes, I am an owner, not a user. Particularly regarding your decision to mandate I maintain a service contract in order to remain eligible for any future upgrades, and if I then decide to purchase a service contract I can no longer sell my system...because you haven't worked out the details yet? Why does that sound insane?
I used my system exclusively. As a creator, I want to know that my tools are available to me 24/7 and feel VERY uncomfortable with the notion that my primary tool is a subscription. Further, to have to maintain a service contract for $599 in addition to purchasing an upgrade. On top of all that I am also under the understanding that you will be mandating a service contract for any surfaces. There is absolutely zero information on what THAT will cost, what it will cover, and what it's penalties will be for lapse... no future upgrades for Eucon? So, what would my entire system's service contract be for an HDX system and 2 Artist boxes? $700 a year? $800 a year? $900 a year? If I were a new customer why would I even entertain the purchase of a new HD system if I knew the possibilites for amortization are limited, or are zero? Does my hardware go on a subscription plan? Yes I know, you're working out the details... Somebody has put the cart before the horse here and it's not me.
Lastly, I have never used the ASC I got with my PT 11 HD upgrade. Between this forum, online video's, and just messing around, I was very successful at using my Pro Tools system to it's full capability, sans bugs, serious or otherwise. Why would I consent to purchase a service contract for almost $1000 a year to have 24/7 phone support that I would probably never use unless it was something so outrageous that it brought the house down and would probably be widespread throughout the user base. There have been a few of those somewhere in the middle, showstoppers at the least, affecting many users, who have spent hours on the phone with tech support, and they have not had resolution. How would the mandate of turning tech support into a revenue stream fix those issues any better than what is currently in place?
Given the choice to be made with little or no information as to the outcome AVID expect's me to hold faith to, in the interest of moving forward, I've sold my entire HD rig, Artist hardware, HD software, and AAX plugins. I'm using your competitors software and hardware (interface and DSP) solutions going forward and so far it's been very productive.
In closing I would like to thank all the great users on this forum for their help throughout the years and especially the mods. They've always gone the extra mile, not only for me but for everyone on the forum.
I will be sticking around the forum to keep my eye open for any change with AVID that may be attractive to me, and to even give back to any that I may be able to. I do have a plain vanilla PT license (perpetual) that I will be using to transfer my old productions to my new DAW if I ever need to.
AVID, One last bit of information I'd like to share. I've been on your competitors forums, and there is a remarkable number of recent ex-patriots using alternative solutions...I am not the only one. I'm sure your competitors are thrilled with your decisions, and lack thereof. Take that as you will.
