Big System Upgrade -- Need Help/Advice!

Hi All,

I am looking for advice on a big system upgrade and very much appreciate any and all input as I feel a bit lost (despite a lot of forum reading and research)…

I currently own a Digi 002 Rack system running Pro Tools LE 8.0.1cs3 with the DV Toolkit on a Mac G5 (PPC)…

I have used this system over the years for both music creation (mainly for recording live guitars and vocals and using Virtual Instruments for all else) and post-production work (sweetening, sound design, and scoring using VI’s).

I’m finally ready to do the massive upgrade that I’m long overdue for and could really use some advice, as so much has changed with Pro Tools, hardware options, etc…

1) My primary use for the system will be music creation (small home studio where I will mic and reamp guitars, track vocals, and rely on VI’s such as Superior Drummer, Trilogy, Omnisphere, etc). Latency during tracking is a big issue for me and I would like the system horsepower to be able to keep sections in MIDI running through VI’s while monitoring this and tracking live guitars and working out ideas.

2) My secondary use for the system will be post-production (sweetening, sound design, etc) and scoring (I have EWQL Symphonic Orchestra and Symphonic Choirs as well as others). I would need to work with OMF and/or AAF files, obviously.

3) I’d like to stay Mac based (I am considering a new Mac Pro system—I could really use advice as to choosing system options and price/performance sweetspots here).

4) In terms of amount of I/O, having onboard MIDI, etc, the Digi 002R was just right for me. I am open minded to thoughts on interfaces, but just to get the ball rolling… I looked at the Apogee Ensemble Thunderbolt and this looked like a good feature set for my needs (although I would need to add a MIDI interface for using my trusty Roland XP-60 as my MIDI controller).

5) Should I be looking at a native system or an HD native system (a full HD system is probably out of my budget)?

6) If HD native (perhaps for the post-production tools?), will HD native software work with the Apogee ensemble (and can you purchase HD native software without the hardware)?

7) Any thoughts are advice very much appreciated!!! =-)

Thanks!!!
