Help needed! How to record guitar?

Hi everyone! Firstly, i'm new to the forum, so hello to you all. Secondly, i am a beginner when it comes to using Pro Tools; i only purchased it 2 months ago, so please excuse the trivial beginners query! Ok, the problem i'm having - i'm using Pro Tools 11 with Komplete 10. I am able to record instrument tracks (using a M-Audio Oxygen 61 thru Kontakt) no problem. I have now came to trying to record a guitar track with my guitar plugged directly into my Fast Track Duo. Strangely, this is where i have hit a brick wall. I cannot get any sound to come through Pro Tools and I have the same problem if i try and run it though Guitar Rig 5 (i can use Guitar Rig stand-alone, but only with WASAPI, not ASIO..?) It does not seem to recognize the hardware as the volume level does not move. In ProTools i have tried creating a track as an 'audio' track - this doesn't work. I have tried creating a track as an 'instrument' track with a plug-in; Guitar Rig 5 - this doesn't work. Am i missing something very basic??
