Difference between a 5.1 track and 6 individual tracks send to positioned monitors

This might be a very stupid question to ask, but is there any difference between a true 5.1 track and 6 individual audio/aux tracks send to positioned 5.1 system monitors?

To be more specific, if I don't pan anything, say just ambience that stays at the same spot, will it sound differently?
