Loving PT12 HD on my MacPro 2,1

I decided to upgrade from 9 HD to 12HD. Doing this required a little work on my part, as PT and the required OS are not supported.

Since I have a PCI Native card I didn't want to buy an iMac and spending $3000 on a MacPro then having to buy an expansion card wasn't something I really wanted to do I figured I would give this a try.

My mac was originally a Dual Core machine. A few years ago I put a couple Quad core processors in it. For this upgrade I maxed out my RAM to 16GB ($100 on Amazon).

I finally got Yosemite working a couple weeks ago. The machine worked ok and PT12 would work but my Waves plugs didn't work, they just came up blank and the display would flash a lot.

I read up a bit and found out my graphics card wasn't supported. I couldn't find any conclusive information on what would work, so I took my chances and bought a refurbished ATI Radeon HD 5770 card. It was $120 shipped from China and took a while to get here.

I put that in yesterday and all the issues I was having went away. I have the Apple boot screen and PT12 is super fast, as is everything about the machine.

I recorded some tracks into a session I had existed (16 tracks with some sends and maybe 2 plugins on each track). No issues at all.

I have 2 192s, MIDI IO and Sync HD.

Aside from the Midname bug that Avid is aware of I have zero issues (with my workflow).

I wanted to post this for anyone on an older Mac on the fence about ordering a new machine vs trying to upgrade an older machine. The $220 that I spent was better then dropping $1000+ for a new machine.
