There are some conflicting reports of how the RAM cache operates. Back in PTHD10, there was a process in the Activity Monitor called KMM_Server which was set to the cache size regardless of how much of the cache you were actually using. With this setup you could slow your system down by setting a cache that was larger than you need.
With PT12.0.0 (and I think 11?), that process is no longer there, and it looks like Pro Tools is dynamically using RAM up to the limit. For example, my system shows the PT app using 18GB memory, but I have my cache set to 24GB. No sign of KMM_Server in Activity Monitor.
