New installation, latency too long

Moved to a new machine, macbook pro 15", 16GB ram, yosemite, 2.8GHz processor, SSD, etc. pretty capable system. Apogee ensemble interface (the old firewire one)

I'm now having some trouble with latency that I didn't have on my old machine though. Recording Elec Guitar direct through a SPDIF input into an apogee ensemble, same as I did on my old machine, connected through the thunderbolt port on a thunderbolt display.

Seems like no matter what my playback buffer size, I'm getting a lot more latency than I remember on the old machine. I've tried checking and unchecking the "rminimize additional I/O latency" box, as well as several others, but it doesn't seem to help. Seems like I'm getting a lot of pops that I wasn't getting on the old machine either.

at 128 samples i should have very little noticeable latency based on my past experience, but I'm getting quite a bit. The buffer settings do indeed change the latency, but even at lower settings I'm getting more than I remember. When the "minimize additional I/O latency" box is checked I get a lot of pops and sizzle.

Any additional places/things to check?

Thanks,
Geoff
