Pro Tools 11 DAE & CPU errors on souped up Mac with low system usage

Hey y’all. I just set up a new iMac running Pro Tools 11.0.3 with an Apollo Quad and I’ve been getting intermittent CPU usage errors (running out of CPU power) and DAE errors (-9073 can’t get audio from drive fast enough), even though my recent sessions have maxed out at only 9% CPU usage. I occasionally got these errors on my previous system but it was always related to high CPU load.

Mac specs:
iMac 21.5” OS X Yosemite 10.10.3
3.1 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
512 GB internal flash storage

The only third party plugs I’m currently running are from the Apollo and these should be processed internally on the unit.

Two questions:
1) Are these errors sometimes simply completely random and nothing to worry about? So far, when I simply try again after the errors it usually works fine, so it’s mostly just worrying me in principle at the moment.
2) Could it be related to my external drive? I’m currently running the sessions on a 7200 rpm LaCie via USB, and there is relatively limited space remaining on the drive (~ 20 GB). Still I would think this might only account for the DAE errors but not the CPU overloads?

Any thoughts on what might be going on? Should I change some settings on the iMac (everything’s pretty much default right now)? New external drive?

Thanks in advance!
