Understanding Waveform Differences

I am noticing that when I record clean guitar I see lots of variation in the waveform, lots of peaks and troughs. But when I record heavily distorted guitar the waveforms are fat and flat, not a lot of peaks or troughs. This seems true whether its recorded direct or mic'd although less when its been mic'd.

Is that the way it should be? I think I saw somewhere that it is worse (maybe sonically?) if you aren't seeing the peaks and troughs.
