Lost control surface on 003

Hi, I am a long term user of pro tools and all has been fine until today when I booted up after a short holiday. I use Pt8 le with a 003 and command 8 and although I do not get full functionality with the command it has worked fine in respect to the faders and transport controls, just the metering does not work. When I opened a session the command 8 was not recognized. I opened up the drop down window for peripherals/ethernet controllers and it was not there so I added it back in to the boxes, but when I clicked OK the 003 went dead. The command 8 had full functionality but the 003 was dead. I rebooted the computer and opened a session and the 003 was right as rain until I again opened the peripherals box and command 8 again took over. I have reinstalled PT and Command 8, and all firmware updates etc but the problem remains. I am hoping that someone out there has an idea of what I could do to fix this. I have tried to contact Avid support but just keep going round in circles. Please help Jonathan Barton Australia.:mad:
