Ive watched this DVD hundreds of times many years ago and yesterday i thought id dig it out and re fresh my memory with some of the skills that Charles Dye used. One thing that i did notice was that when he runs through the EQ on all the tracks it doesnt really look like he does any surgical cuts to any of the instruments. Charles boosts quite alot and he does cut frequencies but no surgical ones just broard cuts.
I also have revisited the Andrew Scheps Pro Tools 10 session to look at how things have been eq'd and again i dont see any surgical cuts either, just big broard boosts and cuts.
This has really interested me beacuse ive watched mant tutorials where they say boost a narrow frequency sweep around until you hear the bit you dont like then cut it. Now obviously the two engineers i mentioned above have mixed many records and know what they are doing but why have both session i looked at have no surgical cuts?
Why have i seen so many tutorials on how to surgical cut a frequency but the pros dont seem to do it. Even a waves video i saw with CLA and how he mixed a Green Day record didnt show any surgical cuts.
Maybe i'm being dumb, but i just thought id get some opinions and thoughts from you guys :-)
