Error: "The I/O Layout of the Audio Hardware has been changed by another application"

For months now I've been having an issue where when I open a session I will get an error that says "The I/O Layout of the Audio Hardware has been changed by another application. Pro Tools will now close and reopen the session in order to update to the new settings. Do you want to save the session before closing?"

I have to select save and then session will attempt to restart. Then I will get the same message. After I select save and the session restarts again, this time the session will load and stay open.

This has been happening with a lot of frequency -- more often than not when i open a session.

Lately there's been a new wrinkle -- I'm starting to see get this message sometimes as well: "IO channel count for current playback device has changed. Please restart Pro Tools." When I restart Pro Tools and try the session again, I sometimes get this same message or sometimes the loading process just gets hung up and I have to force quit. And sometimes it gives me the original "The I/O Layout of the Audio Hardware...." message.

Any idea what I can do about this?

Thanks very much

  1. I'm having the same issue. I suspect it may have something to do with the Saffire's on-board software, as the issue began after I used it to record a loopback from a stand-alone piece of audio software. Have you had any luck? This is driving me crazy.
