Imported Audio problem in Pro Tools 8

Sorry this is such an old version, but I'm using Pro Tools LE8 with an MBox. It all seems fine, but I've encountered a problem importing audio and I hope someone can help.
I have created a new session, set a click track, and recorded a guitar and vocal as a guide track. I have then transferred this audio in real time into a digital 8 track recorder.
I have then taken this 8 track machine to a hall and recorded drums, with the drummer playing along to the guide track.
I have then taken the 8 track machine home and imported the drum audio into Pro Tools. So far so good.
However, once the audio is loaded into the session, it only spans about half the duration of the song. I then have to time stretch the region to the full length of the song, then slide the region to match start and end times. This all works, but the time stretching is causing a terrible deterioration of the audio (which it would!) However, I cannot understand why I should need to time stretch it in the first place. As it was played to the guide track which came straight off the session, surely it should fit the session perfectly without any processing?

Please can someone help??!!
