Perpetual Upgrade / Student Question

Need some help from a Avid Rep or someone with the appropriate intel.

Two questions:

1. I am currently on holidays and just found out about upgrading changes for 31 Dec 2015. If I buy the upgrade from a store before 31 Dec do I need to register it before 31 December? as I am away from home, I do not have access to by iLok until I return from leave in January. I can't find anything that gives me information on actual registration, it only mentions purchasing the upgrade.
   
2. I am currently a student at an Australian university, can I upgrade my retail perpetual licence with a student upgrade? or do I have to use a retail upgrade?
