Volume when recording far greater than that recorded?

I'm not too tech-talk-savvy, so bear with me as I attempt to explain what is going on. I am currently experiencing a problem I have not encountered previously. I was recording quite heavily between January and August, doing an EP, no problems. I just started to get back into it again this month to get another track ready for a folk metal compilation album, for which I need to submit by February, and did everything as I normally would, but have encountered a rather frustrating problem.

Anyway, here is the problem I am having: when I try to record my guitar, the volume that I actually hear as I record is far greater than it is normally, and it is much, much greater than that which is actually recorded, if that makes any sense - in other words, the size of the "wave" I see on the screen is what it always has been when I recorded in the past, but the sound I hear coming from my speaker as I record is crazy loud in comparison. So I can't hear the other instruments as I record (which are currently just midi piano/strings and an imported audio drum track) due to the guitar being so loud. I tried just turning my amp down to the point that I can hear everything else as I record in order to play along. But to get to that point, the volume knob on my amp is about a fifth where I would normally have it. So hardly any sound gets through - when I play the track back, it is far too quiet. Even if I then turn the volume knob right up in Pro Tools on my guitar track as I've finished recording, the sound is barely there. I've tried turning the other tracks up to maximum volume as I record (sounds horrible, haha), but they are still not loud enough. The volume knob on the guitar tack in Pro Tools does not affect the volume I hear as I record, but it does work when I play it back afterwards. When I turn down the gain on my audio interface, it doesn't help, as everything goes down.

I hope I have explained my problem in an understandable way. I've also tried a different amp, but to no avail. And it makes no difference if I mic the amp, or use the emulated output.
