y'all, I am hurting bad. I don't know if you guys will understand but I'll try to get your sympathy anyway.
Here in Atlanta, we have a radio station - WRAS 88.5. I "discovered" it in 1979 at age 13 and it blew my mind. It's the college radio station for GSU, and is known as one of the finest college radio stations in the country. I owe probably my whole musical career to this station as it opened my mind up to music that, to me, is far more interesting than what the music industry has been force feeding the public for decades. In short, I LOVE this station. When I moved away and came back I was so happy to dial in again. When I travel I miss it. It is the only radio station I really listen to... 35 years now. My musical tastes do not grow old. I owe probably 98% of my music collection to this student run station. This station is largely responsible for a number of popular artists gaining recognition too: REM, Outkast, The Black Crows, Collective Soul to name a few. Yours truly has had quite a few songs on the air thanks to them as well. This station is a community asset. The radio here generally sucks and WRAS is a bright and shining star in our city.
I know I'm going long... anyway, GSU just made a sleazy deal with Georgia Public Broadcasting to air GPB content from 5am to 7pm, relegating the student programming to the graveyard shift. They did not consult with the student staff and management before they did this. The current staff and decades of alumni are all in shock and disbelief, and feel betrayed. I feel betrayed too along with thousands of other listeners and fans. They basically dumped the news yesterday on the shocked staff and listeners. Secret effing deal.
I have no problem with GPB, but there are already GPB/NPR stations in this area, but there is only one WRAS. Heaven knows we already have enough news/talk in this town. We don't need another one. The loss of this station is going to hurt a lot of people.
Anyway, someone has put up a petition to stop this from happening. Can you help me and my city, the music and musicians, the students and DJs that work there? This is a huge deal for us!! I have honestly been in this weepy funk all day since I heard the news. I'm not alone either. We are about to lose something very special.
