very slow to record and playback

have just installed 11 native...ver 11.2.1...I get a delay of around 5 seconds each time a) I try to record, b) after recording before the waveform appears and c) when i try to playback..is this just the processor can't handle it (Intel Core duo E8600 3.33; 8 mega ram) or is something else, System works fine with Nuendo and other video software..
