This problem started two days ago, and I've been waiting until Saturday (today) to get some time to work on it. When I open existing PT 11 sessions I'm working on (iMac, i5, 16 GB, circa 2012) I get a message that:
"The following plug-ins were made inactive because they could not be found in the plug-ins folder:'
and then it proceeds to list all the midi Instrument plugins from Air ( like VacuumPro, Hybrid, DB-33, Xpand!2, Transfuser), from Native Instruments (Guitar rig, Kontakt 5-AAX and Reaktor5-AAX), from UAD (firewire Quad, Ampex, Neve 88RS, Ocean Way Studios, Textronix, UA 1176) and FXPansion BFD3. There are also a few non-instrument plug-ins not found, specifically AIR Stereo Width, Blue Cat's FreqAnalyst2 and Elysia Riveau filter
When I open the session (I can still open it), those plugins are in active, but some of the other dynamic ones like EQ3-1band is active. If I go to my inserts and look at what still shows up, there are about a dozen or so of the standard dynamic (eq, reverb, etc) plugins that come with Pro Tools, but that's it. No instrument ones (except "click"). It also effects a few other sessions I've checked, so I don't think the sessions are corrupt, but something in PT's config needs to be rebuilt, I just don't know what.
Now the really super odd thing is that if I go to the active plugins folder, I see all the plugins. The ones that show as inactive in my sessions and the ones that show as active in my session in the same folder tree!
I've done a few things some recommended, like deleting the 6 "pref" files and letting PT rebuild on reopen, as well as repairing authorizations with disk utility. But to no avail. I even upgraded from PT 11.2 to 11.3.1 this morning hoping that would rebuild what ever is corrupt, but it doesn't. I've also checked Avid's page but actually much less useful information there than on DUC.
Sorry for the long post, hope someone can help. Next step would have to be to spend $300 to upgrade to annual support with PT12!!!
