Error When saving:Could not save because I/O error (5)

Could not save as "test 3" because I/O error (5) while creating "Bounced Files" while translating Bounce Settings.

I cannot save anything, make any backups or "save copies in" etc.
Originally i thought it was an issue with my external hard drive's compatibility as i use it between pc and mac and yesterday had some issues with iTunes suddenly deciding that it was "installed incorrectly" on the pc, which i have now resolved. However that does not seem to be the case as other pro tools sessions save on the hard drive just fine.

I don't believe it has anything to do with my eleven rack as i do not have it connected during this particular session due to my current lack of available usb ports.

I am now suspecting it could have something to do with this:
For some reason my main audio file which contains the vocal track that I am working on a remix for was not making any noise or registering on its fader. When i checked the file in audio files it said 0kb (had no data on it), and says it was modified a several days ago. I have no idea why this is. I also noticed that i was getting the following message every time the session attempted to make its automatic back up:

"Pro Tools was unable to Auto Backup your session.

If your session is on a read-only drive, you must disable "AutoSave" by unchecking "Enable Session File Auto Backup" (located in the Operations tab of the Pro Tools Preferences dialog) to avoid this error.
(Error was: I/O error (5) )"

I replaced the offending file in audio files with the original which was still located in the downloads section of my mac and the track plays fine again.

I am still unable to save though!!
I have not manually changed any i/o settings as i am still in an early composition phase using only midi tracks painted in.

Please could somebody shed some light onto what error code 5 is and possibly anything else they might be able to suggest on my predicament???
