I've been gone for years but I thought I might offer my recent experience with Pro Tools and Logic.
I had been using Pro Tools 10 with 003 for interface. It was ridiculously unstable with problems every time I tried to record. And after doing some research it seemed like the problem was Pro Tools. in post after post on several sites people were expressing their upset with Avid or Pro Tools.
So I decided to wipe the computer (2011 iMac i5), install Yosemite and download Logic. I was under the impression that my iMac was too slow for Pro Tools 12 and I didn't want to buy a new computer again.
So I wiped the computer, bought Logic and discovered that the 003 would not work with Logic. So I bought a Scarlett 6i6 after talking with my sales guy at Sweetwater. I needed SP/DIF for my front end. And it worked like a charm.
Unfortunately I really didn't like Logic. Some bits and pieces are wonderful (especially the approach Logic takes to comping) but I couldn't really figure out the menu system and I didn't like the darkness, the multiple sections of the main screen and other stuff. I had the Groove 3 tutorials and even after repeated watching I still stumbled around.
So I decided to get the Pro Tools upgrade to 12. Wow. Finally I have a system that just works. I know the software (I had a 001, 002, 003 and Pro Tools from whatever that was with the 001) and it works perfectly. Uses much less CPU. No crashes. No dialog boxes.
So I think my problem was the 003.
My only gripe is that when I updated to RX4 it had the same darkness as Logic. I now own logic and it does appear to be incredibly powerful software, and maybe someday I will master it. But for now I am back home in Pro Tools.
Thank you all for your posts and feedback over the years. I have learned so much here.
