Greetings!
I will be doing a choir recording next week and was wondering if I could get some tips on a good setup, mic techniques, mic placement etc. I usually do rock'n'roll band recordings so this is a new genre for me.
It's not a live concert so we will focus on getting a good performance with as many takes as necessary. It's a 8 piece male choir and grand piano. The pianist is also the choir conductor so this limits the spacing between these two elements as the conductor need to keep eye contact with the singers. The hall where we are recording has nice acoustics and natural reverb so I would like to capture the room acoustics.
This is a low budget thing and my rig is as follows:
DAW - Pro Tools 10
Interface - Digi003
Preamps - Focusrite octopre mk2
Mics: pair of Line audio CM3 small diaphragm cardioid condensers, pair of Rode NT2A multi-pattern large diaphragm condensers, AT2020 large diaphragm cardioid condenser, SE mini large diaphragm cardioid condenser, 3x sm57.
I was thinking of doing a ORTF setup with the CM3's close to the choir and the NT2A's set to omni further away to catch the room ambience. This leaves me with the AT202, SE mini and sm57's for the grand piano (not very grand mic selection though). I'm not sure on how to work this one out but I guess I will try to position the piano, open lid, so the back of the lid faces the choir?? Maybe I should try to make some barrier between to avoid leakage but it's difficult as the conductor (pianist) need clear eye contact.
Regarding the ORTF setup, does anyone have any tips on a good height and angle when doing such a recording? Would it be best to position them up high facing downwards towards the choir or should I have them positioned in more of an eye level, straight angle? Also distance from the choir? Of course I will use my ears but if anyone has any guidelines...
All tips would be nice!
